Yesterday evening, around 8:20pm PST, my grandma, the only grandma I ever had, passed away. This came as a huge blessing as the last year has been a hard one, and a huge surprise as her condition worsened so quickly over the last few days.
We will most definitely miss my grandma, but are so happy that she is able to move on to the next life to be with her family, daughter and husband. We all wish we could have been there to see that joyous reunion because without a doubt I am sure it was quite a celebration.
My grandma recently turned 95 this past June. She was a talented poet and wrote me poems on special occasions. Even though I did not inherit her talent in this area, I attempted to write her a poem on her birthday.
To my dearest Grandma on her 95th birthday,
who has blessed my life in ways I can never repay.
I have so many memories from my childhood,
of feeling so loved as much as any granddaughter possibly could.
Forever will the memories of freshly made raspberry jam,
linger with me as well as your yummy jello and warm Christmas Eve ham.
As a child I was always enamored by your candy bowl,
where I was never able to practice much self-control.
Your fish pond, lemon tree, game cabinet and of course your laundry shoot,
will forever be engrained in my mind as being such a hoot!
But besides all the fun that I had,
it was the love that I felt from you that made me feel most glad.
Your service to others throughout your life,
has taught me how to be a better person, church member, mother and wife.
You have so many special qualities that I wish I had,
especially your love for adventure and quick wit, which I defiantly must add!
On your birthday today I wanted you to know,
that I am so thankful to have you in my life both now and all those years ago.
I hope as you celebrate your birthday this year,
much happiness, joy and fun will appear.
I love you Grandma and will miss you dearly.

24 Hours with the DeBiekes'
Besides visiting family in Utah we planned a day to spend with our good friends Chris, Annie and James DeBiekes. Pat has known Chris since junior high, when Chris moved to Colorado, and they have been friends ever since. We even moved into the same six-plex as them when we got married, and had so much fun being neighbors for the first 2 years of our marriage.
It was so fun to hang out with them just like old times; it was as if we never left. We enjoyed our time together by going to Provo and reminiscing, eating J-Doggs hotdogs, shopping at the BYU bookstore, taking night walks, watching movies, and eating LOTS of candy.
Despite all that fun, the highlight of our time with Chris and Annie was spending time with their son James. I have been itching to see their little boy in person for over a year and a half. We were able to see him a week after he was born, but have missed this past year and a half since moving to NY.
We are not sure if we love him so much because we love Chris and Annie so much, or if we just love him because he is the cutest kid ever, but either way, we had a blast playing with James and seeing him in person. We are his biggest fans.

A Night Out at the Weber State County Fair
Last Wednesday night, my family and I went to the Weber State County Fair, and boy, a county fair certainly brings in the most unusual crowd. Even after living in NYC for over a year, I saw more "interesting" people at this fair, than I have in all my time in the city. Let's just say we spent a lot of time people watching, and had a blast.

Chocolate Chip Cookie Bake-Off
While in Utah, my sister Kim and I both claimed to have the best chocolate chip recipe. We decided that only way to settle this argument was to put our cookies to the test, and have a cookie back-off!
One evening we went to the store to gather our supplies and went home and to start the baking. It was like being in a reality cooking show. We both had handicaps as we didn't have all the bake ware we were used to and I accidentally added 3x the amount of baking soda to my dough (WHOOPS!).
Surprisingly, our recipes were quite different, which just added more excitement to the process. We first had a cookie dough tasting test, as we had different people try the different doughs. After all the dough is just as important, or maybe even more important, than the finished product.
However, we still didn't have a definite winner, as some people liked her dough more and others like mine. But to be honest, I actually enjoyed her dough more than mine.
Next, was the actually cookie taste test. You see, my recipe only makes 12 cookies, since each cookie is 4 oz; my sister's recipe makes about 5 dozen. This means my cookies are a lot bigger than my sisters. So in order to have a totally unbiased judges we had to break up the cookies into bite portioned sizes.
Each judge had a different opinion, which left us with a cookie bake-off tie! My mom said that they tasted too similar; however, Kim was convinced she could tell which cookie was hers, after all, she had been making these cookies for over 8 years. So this time, we put Kim to the test.
We broke off each of our cookies into bite size portions. As Kim closed here eyes, my mom and I fed Kim my cookie to her first. Right away Kim said that it was my cookie. Pretty good, but we didn't tell her if she was right or wrong. Next as I grabbed her cookie first, my mom motioned for me to feed her my cookie AGAIN. In the taste test that Kim and I were doing before, we fed each judge each a piece of our cookie right after the other. However to really test Kim in her cookie knowledge we played a little trick and sure enough as soon as we fed her MY cookie again she said "That is DEFIANTLY my cookie." hahaha So apparently when eating cookies side by side they taste quite similar.
The Cookie Bake-Off ended in a tie. We determined that each cookie was delicious. If you want to have your own cookie bake-off against my 4 oz cookie, go for it, and let me know what you decided!

Bowling Alley Photo Shoot
Last Monday, as the stock market plummeted, my family enjoyed a few games of bowling. I am always a little hesitant to bowl with Pat because of our on going competition. Thank goodness I still have the title of "BOWLING CHAMPION" as I beat him both games. However, I do not have this title with my sisters, as I won the first game but came in a depressing third on our second game.
My family is pretty good at bowling. I attribute this to the fact that in our small town of Moraga, California, growing up the only thing to do was go bowling at our local bowling alley.
It was a lot of fun to enjoy a few games of bowling and have a little healthy competition between siblings. Unfortunately my mom, who was a great bowler back in the day, has since had some shoulder problems, and was unable to bowl like her normal self. It wasfunny fun to see her and Pat team together and find a solution to her bowling problems.
