Doritos Guardian from Patrick Koelling on Vimeo.
So, we found out this week that sadly enough Pat did not make the final 6 of Crash the Super Bowl Doritos commercial. Regardless if he won or not, I am so proud of him for following through with and believing in his idea.
It was so fun for Pat to be a part of the whole process and see all the work that goes into making a 30 second commercial.
Pat really got into Hawks through this commercial. I bought him binoculars for Christmas so he can go bird watching, spoting his ever-so-loved hawks in the wild.
The commercial was super legit. Working with BYU film students was just as good as the real thing, because they ARE the real thing.
The make-up artist on set was super talented. These gauges by the hawk, looked startling real. It was too bad you couldn't see more of her work during the commercial.
Pat was in charge of the wardrobe. Ever detail was perfect with a Three Wolf Moon shirt, Acid Wash Jeans, and Reebok Pump shoes. Scarily enough, everything except the shoes has become of part of Pat's everyday attire.
R.I.P Hawk
Pat working with the local radio personality, Alex Kiry. Pat is a huge fan of Alex's night time show, "The Night Side Project," so it was so fun to meet and work with him.So, sad story. Right before shooting the last scene of the commercial, when the hawk flies through the window, the hawk flew away! The Hawk Master wasn't too worried because he had a tracker on the bird. However, hours later there was still no sign of the hawk. They had to call the shoot quits and figure something out. They ended up finding another bird to replace the hawk during this one scene and shot it on a green screen. However, sadly a week later the Hawk Master found his hawk, but it had been eaten by an eagle! All he found were the hawks bones picked clean in the eagles lair. The hawk was so sweet and cute! We had hoped Pat would win, so the hawks sacrifice would not be in vain.
Alex Kirry was so funny when working with the Hawk. There was a time when they tried to simulate the Hawk actually attacking Kirry. They put some meat on Alex Kirrys chest and had the hawk fly over and eat it. The Hawk's owner was unsure of what the Hawk would do, it being a wild animal and all, so he gave strict instructions to Kiry to cover his eyes, so the hawk would not gauge them out.
I am so glad that I have such a nice husband who lets me follow him around and take pictures. It was fun for me to be a part of it.

That is so cool that you were able to be on the set! I loved looking at your great pictures and getting a behind the scenes look. It's crazy how much work goes into one 30 second spot. But it turned out so great, it honestly looks like it could've been on TV. Once again, I can't believe Pat didn't win this. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI can't believe he didn't win! It truly was amazing. I was showing it to people at my work and everything. It's the experience that counts, though, and it seems like he learned a lot!
