So I need a coat for the upcoming NYC cold and windy weather. I saw this rockin' deal on LandsEnd, where they had 40% off their online store. Of course a lot of styles, sizes and colors were out of stock by the time that I saw it. However, I found this one jacket (shown above) that could have work- they had my size and I liked that length. I was a little hesitant because I was not sure if I was forcing myself to like it because it was a "steal." I also have NO CLUE on what is good looking as far as coats go--was I making a rash decision? There have been so many times where I buy something because it is a good deal and then I NEVER wear for one reason or another. I did not want that to happen again...so what was one to do!?!?!?!??!And then it came to me like a vision from above...
ASK A STYLIST!!!
My friend Casey and her friend have their own Style Consultation business here in NYC called Buttoned Up. They do anything from buy you clothes to helping you create stylish outfits with what you already own.
They also have a service where you "ask a stylist" for their adivce. You can send a question on how to wear an item, pictures of clothing you are considering purchasing, or any other fashion-related question you have. They will respond to your texts within an hour and to your e-mails within 24 hours!
This was exactly what I needed!!! So I did it! I sent Casey an email with a link to the coat I was considering purchasing. And within the half-hour I was able to make my decision with no hesitation.
Casey said:
"I really love the structure and length of the jacket.
It would look great on your long lean body, but I have three hesitations.
1. The light ivory color would get dirty quick in this city.
Just imagine leaning up against subway doors, sitting on park benches, etc.
2. In the winter time, everybody wears black.
A bit drab, I know, but true, so you might stick out in a long white coat.
Not a big deal, but your call.
3. I read a couple reviews that while the jacket is warm it doesn't block wind.
NYC is basically one big wind tunnel, and I would definitely invest in a
jacket that does have an internal wind breaker."

There you have it. My decision was made. I was not going to purchase it. It was amazing how Casey was able to bring up issues I never even considered. This could have been another buyer's remorse incident for me, but thanks to Casey I no longer ever have to have one of those again!
I really want to know this Casey. She seems so cool!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice from our stylist friend Casey. Everything she said is so true! I would add that it is worth it to pay a little extra to invest in a serious coat that will be super warm, block the wind, etc. That way you won't be totally miserable in New York in the winter!
ReplyDeleteHappy I could be of assistance!
ReplyDeletePS. I'm loving this free advertising. Thanks! :)
Don't feel the need to only wear black. I love my gold puffy coat. :)
ReplyDelete(PS, Uniqlo is a great place to get a warm down puffer without making a giant investment.)
norma kamali makes awesome "sleeping bag" coats that are more form fitting. idk about paying that much for a coat but i think it's a good start as far as silhouettes go with "puffy" winter coats.
ReplyDeleteplus, the story behind her sleeping bag coat is pretty cute.
love this :) I have waay too much stuff that I need to get rid of and unfortunately here in Malaysia it's really tough to "give away" used clothes so I am feeling a bit bad about wanting to get rid of stuff...
