However, gift giving is not always so easy when you do not have an unlimited budget (oh, how fun would it be if we did!). Yet, not all is lost. I wanted to share some gifts I received and gifts I gave that didn't cost much, but were appreciated due to the thought and time it took.
My best friend, Meghan, and I have been friends since 7th grade. We have experienced a lot together and will forever be friends regardless of how often we talk or see each other. When we graduated high school, Meghan gave me a journal as we went to our separated colleges. We would write in the journal for a few days and then send it to the other person. During this time of keeping this journal, Meghan read the Book of Mormon, was taught by the Mormon Missionaries, and then joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Later-day Saints (aka Mormon Church), all in a matter of 6 months.
For Christmas I wanted to give her a piece of the journal to remind her of our friendship and everything we have been through together. So often memories are hid up in a box or bookshelf, so I wanted to create something that could be displayed so these memories would not be forgotten or hidden.
I had taken pictures of Carla and her husband a few months ago, so I used one of those as reference along with the custom portrait my friend has. I had most of the supplies on hand, since I once aspired to be an art teacher (even got my degree in Art Education), so I went to work. It didn't take long, and since the style is not to have faces, it made it that much easier.

I was so embarrassed/nervous to give it to Carla, but was pleased that when she opened it she cried a little (I am sure it had NOTHING to do with the fact that she is pregnant). Even if she never puts it up, at least she knows that I cared enough to try, took the time to paint it, and thought of something that she would like.
Plus, it is always fun to be artsy to create something out of nothing.
So...I am interested if anyone else received or made some great gifts this year.
I am always looking for ideas! So please share!

I love that Journal idea. I might have to do that with Sharday when she gets home with all the letters we write each other. YOu are so STINKIN talented it kills me. You took all the gifts when you came to earth!
ReplyDeleteI am the WORST gift giver. It just doesn't enter my mind to give people gifts (I guess it's not one of my "love languages"). I admire your gift-giving talents and aspire to be more like you! I love that painting you did, and the journal thing was SUCH a great idea. I would never think of something like that! You're amazing.
ReplyDeletep.s. Those measuring cups you got me for Christmas were so cute and such a thoughtful gift! You are a great gift giver.
You are so creative!! I remember in 5th grade always making you draw for me and thinking how cool your handwritting was! And remember in Jr High those mirrors you made? I loved that. I so so sooo love that Journal Frame you did for Meghan. I wish I could come up with these creative gifts.
ReplyDeleteYou are the best gift-giver ever. I have so many treasured gifts from you!
ReplyDeleteLove all of these! The pies in a jar are a favorite of mine (do you have a recipe? I have a good one here - http://wirewhisk.blogspot.com/2009/10/pies-in-jar.html).
ReplyDeleteAnd the painting that you did? Amazing! Love it, & am so jealous that you could actually do one yourself (instead of having to hire someone to do it like I did!).
I've always wanted to try those pie thingys. I may be pie's #1 fan.
ReplyDeleteI love the painting-how much do you charge? :)
For you Julie? Nadda, Nothing, Zilch, Zip, Zero, Null.
ReplyDeleteHi... love the wedding gift idea!
ReplyDeleteOur favorite gift ideas normally involve food... a few of my favorite things: Brownie or cookie mix in a quart mason jar, layer all dry ingredients then list the items, quantities and baking directions required to complete the food item.
Another, purchase large coffee cups small bags of specialty coffee blends or instant hot drink mix such as Russian Tea... fill the cups with a sweet treat biscotti, cookie, cinnamon roll etc and wrap them all ... cup, treat and drink mix together in cellophane tied with a bow.
Wow, I love the tea cup idea. I'm definitely going to get some for my book club. Also love the pie in a jar, I'm a sucker for homemade gifts. They're so sweet and thoughtful.
